Ramadan and COVID-19

Updated: Oct 14, 2021

In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful

…. it may well be that you dislike a thing even though it is good for you, and it may well be that you like a thing even though it is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know. (Quran 2:216 )

We are all encouraged to read Surat Al Kahf every Friday and to understand the story of Prophet Musa’s encounter with Al Khidr ( Quran 18: verses 60 – 82 ) where Allah SWT tries to teach all of us about his wisdom and his complete knowledge about the future.

Allah SWT is Al Hakim, the One who has perfect wisdom and Al Alim, The One whose knowledge of the past, present and future is deeply rooted and complete in all respects and He is Al Barr, which means the Kind and the source of all Goodness.

We, as human beings, are very short-sighted and we rush to judge things at face value but a Muslim’s faith in Allah’s Qadr or Decree makes it easier to accept Allah’s ruling without any question. Muslims have to be positive about everything and know that there is good behind everything that happens because we are dealing with Allah SWT, the most kind.

SubhanAllah, who would have imagined that we would be fasting Ramadan with all the Mosques asking us to pray at home. Ramadan with no Taraweeh or Tahajjud prayers at the Mosques would have been unthinkable a few months back. Muslims all over the world had a heavy heart not to be allowed to get together and pray especially in the Holy Cities of Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem and yet, we all tried to make this Ramadan the best ever.

Prayers at home have strengthened the family unit. People have time to call and check on family, to bond with their children, to get their pending work done and to contemplate on Allah’s power and reflect on what is really important in this life. Muslims stepped up to help neighbors and communities in an unprecedented manner as well.

Allah SWT is Merciful and from His mercy, He allowed for Mosques to call the Adhan in Europe and North America as a source of comfort during this difficult time. This was a historic moment for Muslims. No one would have thought this could be possible especially during our lifetime.

The joy and happiness that Muslims all around the world felt to hear the Adhan in

Melbourne – Australia,

Amsterdam, Netherlands,

Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis – USA,

Brussels – Belgium,

Duisburg – Germany,

Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa and Hamilton – Canada,

Waltham Forest borough – East London is indescribable.

What a beautiful way for Allah SWT to remind us about the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah that the Prophet PBUH signed with Quraysh. The Sahabahs ( the Companions ), May Allah be pleased with them, thought that the treaty was not in Islam’s favor but over time they realized all the good that it embodied.
